Galapagos Tortoise

The Galapagos tortoise is one of the largest living tortoises in the world. They are native to the seven islands of Galapagos archiepegalos. When these adults are fully grown they weigh over 300 kg and measure up to 1.2 meters long. These animal live for long their life expectaney is 150 years. Their population fell dramatically after hunting and introduction of predators and grazers by humans since the 17th century. Our of the 13 orginal subspecies 10 remain. Conservation efforts from the establishments of Galapagos National Park and Charles Darwin Foundation has been successful. Hundreds of juveniles are released from captivity into their home islands. These animals are the most symbolic animals of the fauna of the Galpagos Islands.
